What’s Happening In The PC Marketplace?

by Kazu Oda

Because of the current economic struggles, PCs have been undergoing some new innovations in order to deliver higher performance at a reasonable price. However, even with these changes and reduced prices, many customers still can't afford a new computer. This, in turn, has caused a serious decrease in PC shipments.

Desktop PCs experienced the worst losses, while laptop computers actually gained some ground. Which is to say that they started shipping more units, but the value of those shipments went down quite a bit. So whether it is declining shipments or declining profit, the computer industry seems to be having some trouble at the moment.

In general, the entire market for PCs is having some trouble. When times get tough, businesses are cutting their spending and making old computers last, and individuals are taking more time to consider their personal budgets. This has led to a new kind of consumer base in which they convince themselves that the older models are "good enough."

That wasn't a problem a couple years ago. Back then it seemed that any computer use was more than willing to shell out money for the latest computers and gadgets. However, desperate times call for desperate measures, and consumers have slowly turned away from high-end, expensive computers and seek out the more affordable models.

There is, of course, still plenty of innovation in the industry. Intel recently announced the release of the Corei7 and Core i5 processors that will improve computer performance for high end applications like games and digital media machines. At the same time, these processors will be a lot more energy efficient than previous models.

Laptop and tablet PCs are also changing a lot. Because this part of the market is actually growing manufacturers are seeking to make the user experience even more enjoyable. Many companies have implemented new touchscreen technology to create an intuitive way to interact with the computer. Multi-touch screens have recently been released as well, to give users even more precise control over various objects.

Probably the biggest news on the horizon is the impending release of Microsoft's new Windows 7 OS. This operating system is going to solve a lot of the problems that came from the previous system. At the same time, they are including native support for a wide range of the emerging technologies.

Even with these new innovations, will the PC industry be able to turn around? No one can say for sure, but there have been a number of optimistic projections. The reason is that even though the shipments of desktop PCs are decreasing, laptop and netbook sales should pick up the slack. Time will tell if that will be enough.
