Make sure they have some sort of warranty. 30 days is good because if there are any problems, you will likely find out within that time frame.
Garage sales and flea markets are good places to check for a cheap laptop too. Ask to turn the computer on and test it out. Run as many programs as you need to until you are convinced the unit works properly. Also check that the battery still charges. An icon in the task bar will usually indicate this. A battery can be costly, if not impossible, to replace.
