Laptop vs. Desktop: How to Choose

by Lance Stermole

If you're in need of a new PC, you might be wondering whether you should go with a desktop or a laptop. A desktop computer is affordable, powerful, and easily upgradeable. A laptop, on the other hand, is expensive, slower, and much more fragile. Why go with a laptop over a desktop?

The reason to choose a notebook is, of course, portability. Until you've tried using one, you really can't understand how truly convenient laptops are, since they allow you to work anywhere. Under a tree in the park, at a coffee shop, it doesn't matter. Laptops give you the amazing benefits of working anywhere.

There is nothing quite like this freedom of truly mobile computing. No longer are you chained to a desk. You can work anywhere, anytime, and greatly improve your quality of life. It's a beautful thing, really.

For the real "power users," an average notebook might not cut it. If you're doing a lot of graphics and video work, you might want to look into a so called "desktop replacement" laptop. These provide all the power needed to get serious work done, albeit at a large size and heavy weight.

Now, if you're into image editing, video encoding, or any other high performance task, you're going to need a little more power. For people like you, there are so called "desktop replacement" laptops. Using one of these heavy, bulky laptops will still allow you to get your work done on the go, but at a noticeable weight penalty.

If you want to save some money with your laptop, try going used. Since laptops often loose value fast, you can score some great deals by checking into used versions.

Another option to consider for creative types is the tablet PC. These offer an experience totally different from a desktop computer by allowing you to write directly on the screen. These are great for note taking and on the go creative work.

As you can see, laptops offer some unique advantages over desktops. Sure, you're paying more for less power, but for a lot of users, the portability of the laptop really is worth it. Be sure to consider one as you shop for your new computer.
